Being an undergraduate student in the oldest department at NED University, I have always heard the importance of getting enrolled in such a department. Many students dream to get admission in such departments as they think they will become successful and get a good job with a Handsome salary once they graduated from there. After getting admission, we come to know that to be successful we also need to play and invest equal quality time in studies and not only the label of a good department can make us successful. We get our desired education and move forward in life, and not even bother to look behind at the place that has given us the skill, the ability, and knowledge through which we are standing tall.
While everyone in their final year was striving to find a job for themselves. On the other hand, I was thinking about how can I make my department different. How can I make a change? How can I make the environment better to make a growth mindset in students that are currently studying? I saw that in summers students face a lot of problems, heatwave drains the energy from them and they are unable to fight the heat from the scorching sun. So, my priority was to make a change in the environment we are studying in.

Temperature reaches up to 47 Degrees in Karachi

I did some research on how to reduce the heat load in classrooms whose roof is constantly exposed to excess sunlight.

Roof of Class Rooms Exposed to Sun light

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Increasing heat in classrooms from the sun in the summer season is causing hindrance for the students to learn and make a growth mindset.

PITCH: We can apply techniques and procedures that can decrease the heat load of the rooms. The procedures must not have a bad effect on the environment. After a thorough study, I found that Green Roof is a concept of growing plants and trees on the roof of houses. This concept was developed in Germany but it is now an important part for people having open roofs adding beauty to their houses. So, I decided to transform the roof of our classes into a green roof.

PLAN OF ACTION:

The plan is simple, we just have to fill this place with plantation keeping the structural strength of the roof in mind. Plants love sunlight and we need oxygen to make the environment healthy. Such places are left unnoticed but they are very helpful. Due to plantation radiations due to sunlight will not cause the roof to heat up and affect the indoor rooms.

We’ll search for a nursery and find a reasonable package to cover the roof with a plantation. Then we’ll conduct a plantation drive for our department.

This is a layout taken from the internet that can be opted.

This is not a very big idea but I believe this small change can affect the life of 250 students at least.
